Elle fut fondée par un moine ermite dissident de l’abbaye de Cellefouin (Charentes). Il s’était opposé à l’injonction du pape Urbain II de quitter la règle de saint Augustin pour celle des bénédictins. Il s’établit près d’une source.

D’autres moines le rejoignirent. L’abbaye, de style roman, fut construite au 12e siècle.
