Gabrielle Chanel a vu le jour le 19 août 1883 dans l’ancien hôpital général de la rue des Boires, aujourd’hui rue Seigneur. Le lendemain trois employés de l’hôpital, âgés de soixante-deux et soixante-douze ans ( !) présentèrent la nouveau-née au service d’état civil comme fille d’Henri Chasnel (sic) et de Jeanne Devolle, marchands l’un et l’autre.

Gabrielle Chanel was born on August 19th, 1883 in the ancient general hospital of the street des Boires, today the street Seigneur. The next day three employees of the hospital, sixty-two and seventy-two years (!) old presented the newborn child in the service of registry office as girl of Henri Chasnel (sic) and Jeanne Devolle, traders both.

Ses parents habitaient au dernier étage d’un immeuble au 29 rue Saint-Jean, à proximité de la place Bilange où son père, marchand forain, vendait des maillots de corps et des corsets. Il se tient toujours un marché sur cette place chaque samedi.
