Châlus-Chabrol

Châlus-Chabrol fut construit au 10^ème et 11^ème siècle par ordre des vicomtes de Limoges, au sommet d’une colline fortifiée dès l’antiquité, sur la rive droite de la Tardoise. De nos jours il ne reste que le donjon de la forteresse d’origine. Richard Cœur de Lion (Melek-Ric pour les sarrasins)  mourut en ce lieu le 6 avril 1199.

Châlus-Chabrol (Melek-Ric for the saracens) was built in 10th and 11th century in order of the viscounts of Limoges, at the top of a hill strengthened from the antiquity, on the right bank of Tardoise. Nowadays there is only a donjon of the stronghold of origin. Richard the Lion Heart died in this place on April 6th, 1199.

A droite de l’entrée se dressent les vestiges de l’église castrale Notre-Dame du Haut-Châlus. Jusqu’à la révolution ce fut l’église paroissiale de la ville haute. Dans sa crypte auraient été enterrés les entrailles de Richard Cœur de Lion. Un gisant sculpté par A .Gherbran en 1999 immortalise ce fait historique.

To the right of the entry we can see the vestiges of the castel’s church Notre-Dame of Haut-Châlus. Until the revolution it was the parochial church of the high city. In its crypt would have been buried the entrails of Richard the Lion Heart. A recumbent effigy sculptured by A.Gherbran in 1999 immortalizes this historic fact.
