L’abbaye de Chancelade est située sur la commune de Chancelade.

The abbey of Chancelade is situated on the commune of Chancelade.

 

Elle fut fondée par un moine ermite dissident de l’abbaye de Cellefouin (Charentes). Il s’était opposé à l’injonction du pape Urbain II de quitter la règle de saint Augustin pour celle des bénédictins. Il s’établit près d’une source.

A monk Hermit dissident of the Cellefouin abbey (Charentes) laid the foundations of it. He opposed to the injunction of the pope Urban II to leave the saint Augustin’s rulefor that of the Benedictins. He settled near a source.

 

 

 

D’autres moines le rejoignirent. L’abbaye, de style roman, fut construite au 12e siècle.

Others monks rejoigned him. The abbey, of Roman style, was built in the 12th century.

 

 

Isolé dans son écrin de bois et de prairies, au fond d’un val, le prieuré de Merlande semble appartenir à un très lointain passé, égaré dans le présent. Depuis quarante ans il est resté identique.

Alone in its jewell-case of woods and of meadows, at the back of a vale, the Merlande’s priory, seems to belong to the bygones, lost in the present time. Since fourty years it is remained the same.

 

 

 

Cachée sous les frondaisons, nous découvrons l’église avec les cinq  voussures brisées du portail et les meurtrières du chevet.

Hidden under the foliage we discover the church with the five broken curves of the gate and the loopholes of the chevet.

 

 

 

 

Le choeur du sanctuaire actuel est formé par la première chapelle, dédiée à Saint Jean-Baptiste, édifiée au 12e siècle par Elie Audoin, le deuxième abbé de Chancelade, près d’une source qui coule toujours.

Le prieuré de Merlande dépendait donc de l’abbaye de Chancelade.

The actual chancel of the church is the first chapel built by Elie Audoin (12^th century), second abbot of  Chancelade, near a well that always flow.

The Merlande’s priory belonged therefore of the Chancelade abey.

 

 

Les deux baptistères anciens seraient d’origine inconnue.

The two former baptisteries would be of unknow origin.

 

Qui croirait que dans ce lieu si retiré et paisible les guerres ravagèrent plusieurs fois le prieuré ? Pourtant, les meurtrières, la tour de défense au nord, le corps de garde sur le sanctuaire en attestent. Revenus après les guerres de religion, au 16^e siècle, les moines fortifièrent leur prieuré.

Who would believe that in this place such quiet and retired the wars ravaged several times the priory ? Nevertheless, the loopholes, the defensive tower at the north, the guardroom on the santuary attest it. Came back after the religions wars at the 16e century, the monks fortified their priory.

 

 

L’église, qui menaçait ruine au 19e siècle, est aujourd’hui classée monument historique.

The church, that was nearly ruined at the 19th century, today is a Historic Monument.

 

 

 

En 1962, deux jeunes parisiennes s’installèrent dans le logis du prieur et le restaurèrent. Mais la deuxième tour ne fut jamais relevée et du cloître rien ne subsiste.

In 1962, two young women from Paris  installed themselves in the prior’s house and restaured it. But the second tower was never rebuilt and anything remained of the cloister.

 

 

 

J’ai aimé ce chemin de croix moderne. Minimaliste, il ramène à l’essentiel toute la Passion.

I did like this modern Way of the Cross. Mimalist, it returns the whole Passion to the main part.

 

 

  Par temps de canicule, Lisle, petit village de Dordogne, est un but de promenade très apprécié à cause de l'eau omniprésente, toujours propre et transparente.
